Great Hearts Day!

Hello Parents!

 Friday, February 13^th is Great Hearts Day! We have reserved this special day to focus on the virtue of friendship and discussion on the traits that make a great-hearted student. Teachers are planning interactive and fun activities around these topics, and time will be set aside for students to make hand-made Great Hearts Day cards for their classmates, highlighting their virtuous qualities and invaluable friendship. There will be a short celebration with food and snacks.

Archway Classical Academy does its best to introduce students to an academic culture that leaves popular culture at the door.  The time we have with our students is so valuable, and there are so many great ideas, people, music, and art from the ages that we want to introduce them to. Therefore, we want to keep the focus of Valentine’s Day on friendship and what it means to be a good friend. Students will not be permitted to bring store-bought valentines, candy, or gifts to school as it is difficult to find cards that do not include pop- culture and we want students to remember that having a good friend isn’t something you can purchase. The tradition of making Valentine’s Day cards will be carried out at school on Great Hearts Day.

The Jungle Book: Reading Groups

Below, you will find the link for our reading groups for the rest of the quarter. There are a maximum of 10 volunteer slots for each day. This does not necessarily mean that each day will have 10 volunteers, but it does mean that each day will have no more than 10 volunteers. Please remember that you must have a Fingerprint Clearance Card on file to be able to participate in our groups.

Classroom Update: Quarter 3, Week 4

Here is what we will be doing this week in Room 1206:

 

In Language Arts, we will be continuing all of our current units! In Literature, we will be finishing up our work on the first chapter of The Jungle Book. We will be having reading groups for the rest of the quarter, so please be on the lookout for invitations! In Spalding, we will be continuing with another 30 words and our usual test on Friday. In Writing, we will be focusing on reading comprehension, as well as covering poetic terms to help with our weekly poem recitations and discussions. In Grammar, we will be covering compound verbs and how to diagram them in sentences.

 

In Math, we will be looking at the customary system. This means converting yards, feet, and inches. This will contrast our lessons this past week which have been focused on the metric system. There will also be a short introduction to miles to finish up unit 6. On Friday, we will be having our cumulative assessment on Units 1-6.

 

In History, we will be finishing up our unit on the Vikings. This will end with a look at Leif Erickson on Tuesday. We will review for our test on Wednesday, Our final test will be on Thursday.  

 

In Science, we will continue our unit on sound with an in-depth look at the ear and how it receives sounds. We will also be covering pitch.

Here is what we will be doing this week in 1206:

 

In Language Arts, we will be covering many different and exciting things! In Literature, we will be finishing our unit on The Little Prince and literary terms on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will begin our new unit on The Jungle Book! This will be a wonderful unit for our young scholars. Please ensure your student brings his or her copy to school by Wednesday, January 24th. This classic novel is a beautifully told story that is rich in plot and character. It is guaranteed to promote many wonderful conversations in the classroom about virtues. There are a few details in The Jungle Book that I want to let you know about before we begin to read, in case you would like to discuss them at home with your child. Mowgli, the main character, is involved in battles with different groups of animals in the jungle, and he hunts and skins a tiger. The discussions we have about these topics in class, of course, will be handled with a great deal of sensitivity toward personal beliefs. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. In Spalding, we will be forging ahead with another 30 words this week with our spelling test on Friday. In Grammar, we will be reviewing commas, prepositions, and conjunctions. In Writing, we will be working on reading comprehension and focusing on direct quotations and identifying the central narrative thread of a reading. Our idiom this week is "his bark is worse than his bite." Our poem for this week is "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" by Francis William Bourdillon.

 

In Math, we will continue our lessons on measurement, with a focus on kilometers. We will have a quiz on Chapters 1 and 2 at the end of this week.

 

In History, we are currently in the middle of our Vikings unit. This week we will be completing a review of Viking longboats, Danelaw, Norse Religion, and Eric the Red. There will be a take-home quiz sent home on Tuesday. This will be due on Friday, January 23rd. Please check your student's work to ensure that they are answering all of the questions.

 

In Science, we will be continuing our hands-on approach to understanding sound. We will have a quiz on Tuesday and the rest of the week will be spent completing in-class activities to strengthen our understanding.

Below is what your scholars will be working on this week:

 

In Language Arts, we will be continuing our exploration of Antione de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince and new literary terms. In Spalding, we will continue our study of spelling with 30 new words. In grammar, we will be focusing on contractions and direct quotations. In writing, we will be focusing on identifying central themes and comprehension, as well as, command sentences.  Our poem is "The Violet" by Jane Taylor.

 

In Math, we will be reviewing for our cumulative test on all units that we have covered so far. The test will be on Tuesday. This test will cover all information learned in our 3A book. The students will have 70 minutes to complete this test, which has 18 questions. On Wednesday, we will be starting our new book, 3B. The first unit will be on measurement!

 

In Science, we will be continuing our current unit that is focused on sound and the human ear.

 

In History, we will be starting to uncover the secrets of the Vikings. We will be looking at their society, which includes runes, longhouses, and trade. We will also be having our first quiz of the quarter on Thursday. The study sheet will be sent home Monday.

In Language Arts, we will be starting a new book! Tomorrow, we will begin our exploration of Antione de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince. In Spalding, we will continue our study of spelling with 30 new words. In grammar, we will be focusing on commas and contractions. In writing, we will be focusing on identifying central themes and details. We will also be reviewing our linking verbs, predicate nominatives, and predicate adjectives. Our idiom this week is "a feather in your cap". Our poem is "Some One" by Walter de la Mare.

 

In Math, we will be continuing to interpret new data and creating bar graphs and tables. This will carry us through this week. Next week, we will be testing on everything that the students have learned in  math this year.

 

In Science, we will be starting our new unit that is focused on sound and the human ear.

 

In History, we will be starting a new unit on the Vikings!

 

 

Please make sure that your scholar brings all of their school supplies back to school with them. This is what they should bring:

        - Yellow folder

        - Red folder (empty)

        - Green folder

        - Purple folder (empty)

        - Blue folder (empty)

        - Green notebook

        - The Little Prince

        - Their pencil pouch/box with a regular pencil, a red pencil, a highlighter, a dry erase pen, scissors, a glue stick, an eraser, a ruler, and their choice of crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
