Classroom Update: Week 3

Hello Parents!

It is crazy to think that we have only been in school for two weeks! I hope that everyone is finally settling into their routines for the school day.

As we begin week three of the school year, here is some important information. Make sure students are completing their homework by checking their agenda nightly. There will most likely be homework every night. If a child does not turn in homework or they turn in homework without their name on it, they will stay in that day during recess to finish it. If homework is turned in late by one day, it will lose 50% of the credit. If it is turned in two days late, it will lose 80% of the credit. After that point, it will no longer have any value, but should still be turned in.

Also, a reminder about Wednesday Early Release Times:

Beginning on August 20^th, the Archway Arete school day will end at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays rather than 1:15 like we tried this week.  The one hour gap meant that our cross-over families (parents with children in both Archway and Prep) either needed to pay for Study Club or wait in two pick-up lines back-to-back.  This is not a fair decision we asked you to make, and we sincerely apologize.  Our aim was to create more time for our faculty meetings, but it is not worth the burden it placed on cross-over families.  The Prep school day will still end at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesdays.  This means that the gap between our release times will be the same as every other school day, and families can pick up both their Prep and Archway children on the Archway (west) side at 2:20 p.m.  There is no longer any need for study club, and we will refund money to those who have purchased memberships.  Please allow a couple weeks to process these refunds. 

This Thursday, August 28, we will be having Curriculum Night. I hope that you will be able to attend.

Here is an overview of what we will be doing in class next week:

In Language Arts, we are starting on our blue Spalding notebooks, utilizing the phonograms, marking system, and clock letters we have been practicing. Please assist your student with proper formation of clock letters at home, a good resource for how to form these letters can be found here. We are having great fun with our reading of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and will be exploring chapters 3 and 4 together. The joy that the students show during our Literature activities and discussions is truly magical! Please make sure that your student brings their blue Spalding notebook and their novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to class this week. We are still having students that do not have their necessary supplies.

In math, we have just finished our first unit with the Unit Assessment on this past Friday. This week our focus will be on mental math as we transition into Unit 2, which focuses on subtraction and addition problems.

In History and Geography, we will be learning how to use compasses and begin to explore the components of cartography and map making.

In our science class, animal classification will begin this week, with a couple of fun in-class projects to reinforce our understanding of the material.

Math Unit 1 Test

Spalding Spelling Test (30 words)

As we begin week two of the school year, here is some important information. Make sure students are completing their homework by checking their agenda nightly. After that point, it will no longer have any value, but should still be turned in.

This week we will also begin our spelling words in our BLUE Spalding notebook. There is no need to worry about the pink notebook, third grade will not be needing it. I am so sorry for the confusion and the worry over these pink notebooks, but a huge thank you to all parents for contacting me with their concern over these notebooks. That being said, if a child has a Blue Spalding Notebook/Composition Book, they should bring it to class on Monday. These notebooks will not be coming home until the end of the year. Each Friday, there will be a spelling test of the week's 30 words. Monday through Wednesday students will bring home a list of ten words to practice spelling and writing out. On Thursday, these lists will be compiled together to have 30 words to review. On Friday, those words will be on the spelling test.

We will also be beginning our first novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, on Monday. We will be reading aloud in class together for this novel. The students will be bringing home a Reading Log that will last one week and should be filled out daily. It will need to be filled out with the date, the amount of minutes read, the title and author of the book they were reading, and a parent signature or initial for each day of the week. They should be reading about 20 minutes a night in either the novel we are reading in class or another book of their choosing. These logs will be collected every Monday morning.

We will finish up our first math unit this week as well. This means students should be preparing for the unit assessment on Friday by reviewing their workbook pages each night and going over place value.

In History, we are reviewing our geography lessons from last week and continuing to learn about the use of cardinal directions in map making. our focus with cardinal directions will allow us to derive information about places and environments. We will also be finishing our Circle Map Project!

In Science, we will be continuing our study of the scientific method and applying our knowledge to experiments with rubber bands.

Our first week in the classroom is about to come to a close! It has been so wonderful to get to know and learn with each new student in 3B!

Most students have all of their school supplies, but there are still quite a few that do not have everything that they need for school. I have put below all items that are necessary for class. Please go over the list with your child to see what they need for the classroom.

Most students are missing the spiral notebooks for each subject. These should all be separate to make it easier for organization of notes, worksheets, handouts, and other in-class projects.

Meet the Teacher Night

Hello All,

As you know Meet the Teacher night is tomorrow night! You should be receiving an email from Archway Arete outlining the process for tomorrow night's events.

Below are some key points and reminders about the process of tomorrow evening:

1) Times of Arrival:

To alleviate traffic and allow for adequate parking, please follow the schedule below by arriving and departing at the appropriate time:

Last name beginning A-H: 5:00-6:00
Last name beginning I-P: 6:00-7:00

Last name beginning Q-Z: 7:00-8:00

If you have a time conflict, you may arrive at another time but please limit your visit to the scheduled timeframe.  Parking will be available on campus, in the Hobby Lobby parking lot across Baseline Road, and next door at CarLife after 6:00. The Archway building is the westernmost building on campus, and the entrance is on the west side.



2) It is highly encouraged that students bring all school supplies to empty into their desks at Meet the Teacher Night! This will alleviate some of the weight of their back-packs on Monday, our first day of school! Note: The Classics to Keep (consumable literature books from Barnes & Noble) can stay home and teachers will ask students to bring them in one at a time

Welcome to Archway Arete!

Good evening Parents and Students,

I would like to warmly welcome you into our new Archway Arete family! I hope that you have all had a restful summer and are ready for the exciting new school year!

My name is Rebecca Sexton and I’m honored to introduce myself as your child’s teacher for the year. My teaching assistant, Caeli Austin, will be working closely with me in the classroom to ensure that your child has a fruitful and joy-filled year.
