Hello Parents!
I have exciting news! The entire third grade has won a pizza party for having the highest number of yearbook sales! This party will take place tomorrow, May 19th, at lunch, so your scholar does not need to bring lunch tomorrow! If your child is getting hot lunch, we will make sure that they either take home the hot lunch that you have purchased or that they eat that instead of the pizza they have chosen. I am sorry about the late notice! Congratulations!

Classroom Update: Quarter 4, Week 9
Hello Parents!
I hope that we are all ready and excited for the last week of school! We have all worked so hard this year. I cannot wait to celebrate all of our accomplishments on Friday, May 22 with our "Little House on the Prairie" Day. Our celebration will be from 9:30 to 11:30. If you are interested in helping out, please check out our Sign-Up Genuis here. Please remember that you must have a Fingerprint Clearance Card on file with the front office of Archway Arete to come into our classroom.
We will start sending supplies home on Monday and will slowly send home all supplies by Thursday. Students will still need to bring their backpacks on Friday, just in case they have forgotten to take anything home, and so that we can sign yearbooks or signature sheets. Students will have time at school to sign yearbooks all through this week.

In Language Arts, we will be review and assess on all topics that we have learned this year. In Literature, this will take the form of a test on The Little House on the Prairie on Thursday. In Science, we will finish our studies for the year on Wednesday with our final test on the Milky Way, the Big Bang theory, and other parts of the universe outside of our solar system.

My Plans for Next Year
Hello Parents!
I have been asked by many of you what my plans are for the coming school year. In the fall, I will begin a new journey as a Humane Letter and Literature/Composition teacher at Chandler Prep. I have decided on this position as a way to continue my own education and to better manifest my love for the books that we read here at Great Hearts. I have loved every minute of teaching your scholars. We have had so many wonderful moments in class. Whether it be through our first discussions of Edmund in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, or learning about and celebrating Ancient Rome, or memorizing "The Charge of the Light Brigade", or talking about the solar system these past few weeks, I have had an amazing time and learned so much with your scholars. Thank you for being a part of such a wonderful year! I will cherish this past school year for the rest of my life.

Friday, May 22nd: Little House on the Prairie Day!
Hello Parents!
Help us celebrate completing a wonderful year with a celebration on our final day of school! This celebration will be from 9:30am- 11:30am. There will be pioneer-themed food, decorations, and activities! Our activities will include making Indian bead necklaces, making our own butter for our cornbread, making log cabins out of popsicle sticks and, of course, signing yearbooks. If you are interested in being a part of our celebration by being in the classroom, you must sign up here and have a Fingerprint Clearance Card on file at the front office of Archway Arete.

I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing weekend. We are almost at the end of the year! On Friday, May 22nd, we will be having our end of the year celebration. It will be based of The Little House on the Prairie. More detail will come in the next couple days, but keep your eyes out for a Sign-Up Genius if you are interested in helping out our class! Please remember that in order to be able to come and volunteer in the classroom, you must have a Fingerprint Clearance Card on file in the front office of Archway Arete.

In Writing, we will continue reading passages and writing out original answer to questions abut the text. There will be no Touchpebbles or Idiom/Proverb this week due to our end of the year Galileo assessment in ELA on Friday.
In Math, we will be focusing on a new unit: geometry! We will cover angles, shapes, and solids this week. On Thursday, we will take our end of the year Galileo assessment in Math. Our final test in math will be next Tuesday, May 19th.
In History, we will continue our exploration of the Middle Colonies. Our final test in History will be next Monday, May 18th.
In Science, we will be having a quiz on Monday. Then, beginning Tuesday, we will be continuing our exploration of stars and then we will move on to discussing the origins of the Universe, including the Big Bang Theory.

Please make sure to signup for our upcoming field trip before Thursday, May 7th. Our field trip will be on Friday, May 8th. We will be going to see a performance of Pinocchio at the Arizona Broadway Theater in Peoria. The buses will pick us up at 8:15, so it is vital that your student be dropped off at school on time. After the performance, we will go to nearby Hidden Meadows Park to enjoy lunch, please be sure to send your student to school with a nutritious sack lunch. After lunch, we will return to the school around 1:30. Admission is $20 per student.

In Grammar, we will be reviewing concepts that we learned at the beginning of the year. These will include pronouns, nouns, verbs, and correctly changing words from their singular form to their plural form. In Writing, we will continue with our work on summarizing passages that we read together in class. Our idiom this week is "touch and go". Our poem this week is "The Lamplighter" by Robert Louis Stevenson. On your scholar's poetry homework this week, please make sure they divide up the poem by sentence and circle all of the punctuation marks on their poetry homework sheet.
In Math, we will be finishing up Unit 10 with our unit assessment on Monday morning. For the rest of the week, we will be working on reading and telling time.
In History, we will spend the majority of the week reviewing and preparing for our test on the Southern Colonies on Thursday. Then, on Friday, we will begin our study of the Northern Colonies by taking a look at the Pilgrims.
In Science, we will be reviewing for our test on the Planets, which will be on Tuesday. Then, we will be focusing on the dwarf planet, Pluto, and begin talking about stars.

Classroom Update: Quarter 4, Week 5
Greetings, Parents!
I hope that every one has taken the time to recover from our AzMerit Testing over the weekend and are ready to start working hard for the remainder of the quarter!
Our tests and quizzes for the week:
Here is a look at what will be happening this week in 3B:
In Language Arts, we will be continuing our current units. In Literature, we will be quizzing on Chapters 7-12 on Tuesday. Be sure that your scholar is reviewing vocabulary words from those chapters, as well as studying from our Little House on the Prairie notebook. In Writing, we will continue working on summary skills after reading short passages. In Grammar, we will be focusing on applying our newly acquired knowledge of grammar to the way that we speak and the verbal usage of correct grammar. Our poem for the week will be "Furry Bear" by A.A.Milne.
In Math, we will be continuing our study of fractions. On Monday, we will be taking a quiz covering the addition and subtraction of fractions.
In History, we will continue learning about the thirteen original colonies. We will be covering slavery in the Southern Colonies this coming week. We will be sensitive to the emotional development of our students while discussing this part of our history. Some questions will not be addressed in class, so your scholar may come home with challenging questions regarding this difficult topic.
In Science, we will be looking at each of our planets more closely. Each student will be filling out a fun fact book on the planets!

Classroom Update: Quarter 4, Week 4
Hello Parents!
I hope that everyone has a restful and relaxing weekend. This week, our scholars will be taking the AzMerit state test. Please make sure that your child comes to school well-rested and with water bottle and a healthy snack. Please see below to read a message from our Assistant Headmaster, Miss Pantalena.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your child will be taking the AzMERIT English language arts and mathematics tests on April 14th, 15th, and 16th. Testing will begin promptly at 8:15am and students will have until the end of each day to complete the scheduled exam(s). Upon completion of testing each day, students should engage in a quiet activity like reading a book or solving word puzzles, so please send your child to school with something to do when s/he finishes. Instruction in the classroom will continue as normal upon completion of testing each day, and neither homework nor tests will be scheduled on AzMERIT testing days. Just as we always encourage healthy habits, during testing week we especially stress the importance of a good night’s rest and eating a well-balanced breakfast. We also ask that students come to school with a water bottle and healthy snack to eat between tests.
Your children may naturally be curious about the test. If prompted, simply give them a few words of encouragement to try their best and to enjoy the challenge. In Language Arts, we will continue with our journey through the plains of Kansas with Laura and her family in The Little House on the Prairie. We will be covering chapters 7-11. We will also be covering 40 Spalding words this week, but there will be no homework or test on Friday due to the AzMerit testing taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. In writing, we will be working on narration and summaries. In grammar, we will be working on the verbal use of irregular verbs. There will be no poem or reading log this week. There will not be a new idiom this week, but we will be reviewing all of the idioms that we have learned this year.
In Math, we will continue to practice equivalent fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions.
In History, we will continue with our study of the 13 original colonies. Our focus this week will be on the Virginia colony and how it went from barely making it to thriving due to cash crops and plantations.
In Science, we will be learning about the planets of our solar system!

AzMerit Testing Next Week!
Your child will be taking the AzMERIT English language arts and mathematics tests on April 14th, 15th, and 16th. Here is what we will be doing this week in 3B:
In Literature, we will be continuing our progress through The Little House on the Prairie. There will be a quiz on Chapters 1-6 on Wednesday. To help prepare your student, please go over the questions and vocabulary words on the chapter worksheets with them each night. There are still many volunteer spaces open for our reading groups. If you are interested and have a Fingerprint Clearance Card, please sign up! We would love to have you in the classroom! In Grammar, we will be working on creating opinion paragraphs. In Writing, we will continue with our typical narration and summary exercises. In Spalding, we will cover another 30 words and have a spelling test on Friday. Our poem this week is "The Cow" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Our idiom for the week is "The show must go on!".
In Math, we will continue our units on fractions. We will be focusing on comparing and ordering fractions. There will be a chapter quiz on Tuesday. Later in the week, we will focus on adding and subtraction fractions.
In History, we will be starting our final unit on the 13 original colonies! We will begin with the Southern Colonies this week. The Third Grade Team would like to let you know that during week 5 of the quarter we will be having a class discussion regarding the slave trade. This information will be presented in a manner that is appropriate for third graders, but we wanted to let you know when we would be talking about this in case there were conversations you would like to continue at home on the topic. We are including a link to a Google Doc that has the information that your students will be reading in class on the subject. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
In Science, we will continue our astronomy unit. On Friday, we will be having our first test that will cover what we have learned so far.

Here is what we will be doing this week in 3B:
In Language Arts, we will be starting one new unit and continuing the other units. In Literature, we will be beginning our final book of the year, The Little House on the Prairie. Please let me know if your student needs to borrow a copy from the school. Here is where you can sign up for our last set of reading groups. In Writing, we will continue working on reading comprehension and question sentences. In Grammar, we will continue with practicing our dictionary skills, as well as, applying what we have learned in written grammar to how we speak verbally. In Spalding, we will continue with another 30 words this week and then an assessment on Thursday. This assessment will be used as a gauge to see how our students are progressing through our word lists. There is no poem or idiom this week due to not having school on Friday.
In Math, we will be continuing our fractions unit. This week we will be discussing equivalent fractions. We will also be learning how to multiply and divide them. By the end of the week, we will be discussing how to express fractions in their simplest form.
In History, we will be finishing up our unit on the Explorers. There will be an in-class review day on Wednesday and then the final test will be taken on Thursday.
In Science, we will be focusing on Kepler and his additions to our understanding of the solar system. We will also begin to focus on gravity and how it affects our world.

In Language Arts, we will be finishing up some of our units and continuing with others. In Literature, we will be finishing up The Jungle Book on Thursday with our final chapter quiz. Tuesday and Wednesday will be used as review days in preparation for our quizzes. In Grammar, we will continue with our dictionary lessons as a way of preparing for our Arizona state testing in April. In Writing, we will continue identifying the central narrative thread of passages and then writing our own summaries for them. In Spalding, we will continue with another 30 words this week with a test on Friday. Our poem for this week is "At the Zoo" by A.A. Milne. Our idiom for the week is "rule the roost".
In Math, we will be introducing fractions! We will be working on them for a while now. We will spend the week learning and reviewing fractions with a chapter quiz on Friday.
In History, we will be continuing our Explorer's Unit with learning about De Soto's march, the Search for El Dorado, and two English explorers.
In Science, we will be beginning our unit on Astronomy!

Reminder: Athletic Field Day is on Thursday, March 12th. Please be sure to send your student to school with a water bottle. Students may come dressed in athletic attire.

In Language Arts, we will be continuing as usual. In Literature, we will be starting a new chapter on Monday. We will have some parents in to read "Her Majesty's Servants" and "Parade-Song of the Camp Animals". We will be finishing up The Jungle Book after Spring Break with our last quiz on Wednesday, March 25th. There will be a study sheet completed in class on Thursday and then it will be sent home to use as review over Spring Break. In Spalding, we will continue with our usual 30 words and then a test on Friday. In Grammar, we will be working on writing our final drafts of our friendly letters and then we will be moving onto honing our dictionary skills in preparation for the AZMerit testing that we will be taking in April. In Writing, we will continue to work on identifying the central narrative thread of a passage and summarizing passages. There is no idiom this week due to the half day on Friday. Our poem this week is "Bed in Summer" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
In Math, we will be finishing up our unit on money with our cumulative unit test on Thursday. On Friday, we will briefly introduce fractions, which we will be beginning to study after Spring Break.
In History, we will be taking a close look at Christopher Columbus and Juan Ponce de Leon. Please remember to double check your scholar's essay for spelling mistakes and formatting mistakes before having them turn it on Thursday.
In Science, we will be spending the week reviewing for our Light and Eye test on Wednesday.

Typed Explorer Essay: Due Thursday, March 12th
Good Afternoon, Parents!
I wanted to let you know that your scholars have finished writing their essays in class. I am so pleased with how diligently all of them have been working! Students are bringing their packets home this evening with the complete essay written
in them. Typed essays are due Thursday, March 12th. I encourage all of you to help your student format the paper according to the guidelines in the packet, as well as review spelling
with them.
If printer access is an issue, please have your student type his or her paper in the proper format and email it to me, I would be happy to print the essay here at school. Please do reach out to me with any questions.

Atheletic Field Day: March 12th
Hello Parents!
We are excited to announce Archway Arete’s Field Day, which will take place on Thursday, March 12th. Field Day activities will be based on the original Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, events will be held for half of the school
day. Each class’s team name will be an ancient Greek city-state. Our city-state is Croton, whose symbol is the tripod! If you are interested volunteering, please contact Coach Rubino and sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054dacab2fa6f85-athletic.
Students are invited to come to school in athletic wear for the day. They are welcome to decorate their shirts with their team’s shield, but this is not required. Students will be eating lunch in their class room on Field Day, so please
send sack lunches only. This means no food that needs to be microwaved. Thank you so much for your understanding. I’m including the school’s guidelines on the athletic wear students are able to wear for the day:
Non-uniform Dress Code for Special Events Athletic Practice and Outdoor Field Day Dress Code Just as Archway provides guidelines for dress code in the classroom, it is important to project the image of professionalism
in our athletic attire as well. All shirts worn for athletic practices and field day should be modest, loose fitting, in good repair (no holes, torn sleeves, etc.), should be worn either tucked in or well over the waist of the pants/shorts if not tucked in.
No midriffs may be shown. T-shirts are preferred – no tank tops, camisoles, or sports bras may be worn as outer garments. Short should be modest, in good repair (no holes, torn sleeves, etc.). Shorts should be worn at the waist and should be no shorter than
mid-thigh, and no-longer than just below the knee. No short-shorts or long baggy shorts may be worn. No undergarments may be visible. Shorts should be longer than the student’s fingertips when standing. Tennis skirts, Soffe shorts, and other similar items
are no permitted. Attire should be free of logos and messages, with the following exceptions: sports team logos (e.g., Diamondbacks, Bears, ASU), and apparel brand names (e.g., Adidas, Nike, Abercrombie) are acceptable provided they do not make inappropriate
allusions (as do some skateboarding/snowboarding brands). These guidelines also apply to sweatshirts and jackets that students may wear. Footwear should be athletic in nature: no sandals, open-toed, or platform shoes. Hats and sunscreen may be appropriate
if the students will be in the sun.

Here is what we will be covering this week in 3B:
In Language Arts, we will be continuing most of our units and starting a new focus in our grammar lessons! In Literature, we will continue on with our reading of The Jungle Book. This will include comprehension questions, as well as class-wide discussions about the events in the story. In Spalding, we will continue this week with our usual 30 words. In Writing, we will be working on reading comprehension and narration exercises. In Grammar, our focus will be on writing letters this week! We will be covering thank you letters and friendly letters. Our poem for this week is "The Song of Mr. Toad" by Kenneth Grahame. Our idiom is "one rotten apple destroys the whole barrel."
In Math, we will continue working with capacity using gallons, quarts, pints, and cups. We will be taking our unit test on Wednesday. Then, on Thursday and Friday, we will start our new unit which will focus on money.
In History, we are still working on our explorer essays. This week we will begin to write sentences that will eventually be typed for the final draft of this research essay. We will be paying close attention to the writing process and sentence structure. Our scholars will be working in small groups and seem to be greatly enjoying the focus on different explorers!
In Science, we will continue our light unit. This week we will be using magnifying glasses, as well as convex and concave mirrors to show students the ways of light!

On Wednesday, we will be having reading groups and explore a new chapter., "Rikki-tikki-tavi". In Spalding, we will continue with another 30 words. We will also be having a monthly Spalding Assessment to measure their growth from the beginning of the year. In Grammar, we will be reviewing conjunctions, compound subjects, and compound verbs. We will also review diagramming! We will not have an idiom this week due to the half day. We will also be finishing our memorization of "The Charge of the Light Brigade"!
In Math, we will review liters and milliliters. Our focus will be on conversion, as well as adding and subtracting with compound units. There will be a quiz on Thursday. On Friday, we will introduce gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.
In History, we will be using this week to review how to find important facts in books and take notes on our assigned explorer. These notes will be preparation and research for the essays we will be creating in the next week.
In Science, we will be review and discussing this week's activities to gain a better understanding of light. These discussion will also act a s review for our quiz on Thursday.

These are necessary for the AZ Merit testing that we will be taking in April. We need 12 dictionaries that have either ISBN: 978-1-59695-123-5 or 978-0-87779-930-6. We also need 21 thesauri with the ISBN 978-1-5965-115-0. I have updated the classroom wish list in case you would like to donate something to our classroom!

Third Grade Research Essay
Dear 3rd Grade Parents,
The 3rd grade will be completing a research project and essay during the last three weeks of Quarter 3. The majority of the work will be completed in class with the guidance of the teachers. In the case that a student is unable to finish his or her writing in class, some portions may be assigned as homework. Also, the final product will need to be typed at home. If printer access in an issue, please don’t hesitate to let me know. The typed essay will be due on Thursday, March 12th. This essay will be graded as a test.

Here is what your scholars will be learning this week:
In Language Arts, we will be continuing all of our current units. In Literature, we will be continuing our exploration of The Jungle Book with a new chapter, "The White Seal", this week. In Writing, we will continue our work with comprehension and identifying the central narrative thread. In Grammar, we will be focusing on interjections and diagramming them, as well as reviewing contractions. In Spalding, we will get back to covering our usual thirty words this week. We will also be learning the next stanza of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Please make sure that your scholar is memorizing our poem. There has been some struggle with remembering this poem since we started it. Please practice it with your scholar each night, both with the text and from memory. Our idiom this week is "on its last legs".
In Math, we will cover addition and subtraction of pounds and ounces. We will have our cumulative unit assessment on Thursday, with a review day on Wednesday.
In History, we will be finishing up with the Earliest Americans on Thursday with our unit test. On Wednesday, we will be reviewing and playing a study game in class, so that we are all prepared for our test. This should also be continued at home. Our next unit in History is the Early American Explorers. This will begin on Friday with an intensive writing and research project. This project will be done largely in class.
In Science, we will continue our analysis of light with a hands-on approach. We will be having activities and discussions addressing reflection, prisms, and the light spectrum.

Third Grade Coffee Shop Conversation: Thursday, February 19th
Hello Parents,
At Archway Arete, we aim to develop a culture that encourages communication. This is true of our students, our staff, and our families. This is particularly important in the first year of a new school. To that end, Mr. Gillingham will host small group conversations in the Arete library over a cup of coffee in the third quarter. The informal setting gives parents a chance to discuss things regarding student and family life here on campus. Please join us on your assigned morning, and be a part of the ongoing discussion. Space is limited (35 people max) because we would like the discussion to be more intimate, but we will consider a second meeting in the 4th quarter if some families are unable to attend due to size restrictions. We will meet Thursday mornings from 8 am-9 am, starting on January 29th in the library. Each Thursday will be a different grade, starting with kindergarten parents (all sections, KA, KB, and KC).

In Language Arts, we will be continuing all of our current units! In Literature, we are working on Kaa's Hunting (Chapter 2) for this whole week. There will be a comprehension quiz on Friday covering "Mowgli's Brothers" and "Kaa's Hunting". In order to prepare your scholar for this quiz at home, I would suggest re-reading each of these chapters with them each night. As always, if this is how you choose to prepare your scholar for the quiz, feel free to use the time spent re-reading as minutes to put on their Reading Log. In Spalding, we will continue with another 30 words with our weekly spelling test on Friday. In Grammar, we will be reviewing adverbs and sentence types. In Writing, we will be working on comprehension and how to use prepositions and direct quotations in our own writing. Our idiom for this week is "let bygones be bygones." We will be continuing to memorize "The Charge of the Light Brigade" this week by adding on stanza two to our first stanza. Please be sure that your scholar has both stanzas memorized.
In Math, we will be taking our middle of the year benchmark Galileo test on Monday. This is just an internal tool that we use to make sure that students are on track with our pacing schedule. For the rest of the week, we will begin learning about weight! There will be a quiz on what we have learned on Friday.
In History, we will begin a new unit this week on The Earliest Americans! We will start with a review of timelines and then take a close look at Beringia. This close look will include a look at Paleo-Indians, the Inuit, and the Anasazi.
In Science, we will continue our study of sound, focusing closely on how our ears pick up sounds. We will also review how the cochlea communicates sound to the brain. There will be a science quiz on sound on Thursday. Your scholar should have all of the material that they need to study in their purple folder.
